Estimate how long sun exposure can be extended by a sunscreen of a given SPF, and how much UVB it filters.

What is this for?

Sun protection factor is defined as the ratio of the ultraviolet dose needed to produce minimal redness with sunscreen to the dose needed without it. Multiplying the unprotected time to burn by the SPF gives the theoretical protected time — a figure that is reliably optimistic in practice.

How to use it

  1. Estimate the time this individual would take to burn without any sunscreen. Fair skin at midday in summer may be as little as 10 minutes.
  2. Enter the SPF of the product.
  3. Treat the resulting time as an upper theoretical bound, not a schedule — the two-hour reapplication rule applies regardless.

Worked example

A patient burns after about 15 minutes of unprotected midday sun. How long could SPF 30 theoretically extend that?

Answer: 30 × 15 = 450 minutes, or 7.5 hours in theory. In practice, under-application and rubbing off mean protection is far shorter — reapply every two hours.

Clinical pearls & pitfalls

  • The relationship between SPF and UVB filtered is strongly non-linear. SPF 15 filters about 93%, SPF 30 about 97%, and SPF 50 about 98% — the jump from 30 to 50 gains barely one percentage point.
  • Very high SPF numbers encourage a false sense of security and longer exposure, which is why some regulators cap labelling at "50+".
  • Almost nobody applies sunscreen at the 2 mg/cm² used in SPF testing. Applying half the test amount does not halve the protection — it reduces it disproportionately.
  • Photosensitising drugs are a routine counselling point in community pharmacy. Doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, hydrochlorothiazide, amiodarone, and voriconazole are among the most frequently implicated.
  • The most effective photoprotection is not sunscreen at all — it is shade, timing, and clothing. Sunscreen is the last layer, not the first.

Assumptions & limitations

  • A theoretical calculation only. It substantially overestimates real-world protection because of under-application, rubbing off, sweating, and swimming.
  • The baseline time to burn is a rough personal estimate that varies with skin phototype, latitude, altitude, season, time of day, cloud cover, and reflective surfaces such as snow and water.
  • Addresses UVB only. UVA protection depends on the broad-spectrum designation and is not captured by the SPF number.
  • Does not account for photosensitising medication, which can reduce the time to burn dramatically and unpredictably.
